This post is a follow-up to the below entry & a tribute to all I got from my new friend, Benjamin McVey. A talented painter & person, Ben’s been an integral part of my recent growth; acknowledging it publicly seems the best way to say so.
Through craigslist, I commissioned Ben to paint an original for our office. But, I got so much more than great art from the deal. Meeting a man like Ben – passionate, spiritual, open, artistic, awake & interested in life – helped me hone in on what I want & need in my own romantic partner. Mostly glaringly, “not happily married to someone else” is a very important attribute. But, the innocence of the encounters I had with Ben allowed me to openly appreciate & acknowledge the qualities he had that excited me. Even cooler, I walked away knowing so clearly that he was a catalyst, one I needed to hear my own heart & welcome in, at long last, what it wants.
I wish Ben & his beautiful wife all the happiness in the world. Like Schwarz’s song says it so Wicked well, “because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” & if anybody’s got the moolah, buy Ben’s paintings now. He’s going places & sooner than later, you’ll wish you had an original hanging around. Lucky for me, I get to see the Swingline & whistle while I work:
